Omega Manhood Leadership Institute, the award-winning mentoring program run by Eta Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, ended the 2017-2018 school year by providing the mentees with an unforgettable experience; taking flight in a vertical wind tunnel.

This fun and educational activity took place at iFly Indoor Skydiving on Cobb Parkway in Atlanta. The day began with classroom instruction on the science and engineering of this “closed loop vertical wind tunnel” which features two 350 horse power fans. The curriculum was designed by STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) educators, and concentrated on aerodynamics. Then, after some “pre-flight instructions”, the boys, and Scott Elementary’s Principal, Brother Langston Longley, suited up and took turns testing their flying skills.

Post flight, the students had to show what they’d learned about physics by making parachutes using string, a flat plastic panel, tape, and a washer. They competed to see whose design would float to the floor slowest. Every student received a souvenir tee-shirt and other gifts.

OMLI will be on hiatus during the Summer, returning to William J. Scott Elementary in the Fall. The program, open to 3rd through 5th grade boys, will again meet two Saturdays per month.
