Monday, September 15, 2025 marked the beginning of an unofficial week honoring Brother Dr. Henry J. Porter, Sr. in the city of Atlanta. That afternoon at Atlanta City Hall, the Atlanta City Council recognized Brother Porter for his contributions as an educator, musician, and community leader. Many family members, friends, and fraternity brothers were present to witness him receive a proclamation from the City.
Brother Porter was initiated into Omega Psi Phi in 1956 through Alpha Sigma Chapter while he was a student at Morris Brown College in Atlanta. He later returned to Morris Brown as a professor in the College’s Mathematics Department. He also taught in public schools in the Atlanta area. Brother Porter has been a longtime member of Eta Omega Chapter and has served as chapter basileus. He is well known for his beautiful singing voice and has performed across the country for many years.
Later that week, on Friday, September 19, at the Ivy Community Center in Southwest Atlanta, the Morris Brown College Alumni Focus Group held an event entitled “An Evening with a Living Legend: The Dr. Henry J. Porter Experience”. The event honored Brother Porter’s legacy and served as a fundraiser for Morris Brown.
Over 200 people, including some of Brother Porter’s former students, gathered to pay tribute to him. Those who spoke at the event included Omega men such as current Morris Brown President Brother Dr. Kevin James, former Morris Brown President Brother Dr. Samuel D. Jolley, Grand Chaplain Brother Roi Johnson, and current Eta Basileus Brother Kenneth Mitchell. Eta Omega Chapter congratulates Brother Porter on these well-deserved accolades.
