2011 Omegas Make a Difference Day
On a bright and sunny Saturday morning, the normally black and gold Frederick Douglass High School was transformed into a purple and gold community gathering. The men of the Eta Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. were out in force to host a day-long series of free classes and workshops for Atlanta residents. The event, entitled "Omegas Make a Difference Day", was held on April 30, 2011, and was the first annual Eta Omega community service day.
The "Omegas Make a Difference Day" workshops provided guidance on home buying, standardized test prep, foreclosure prevention, and job seeking. These workshops were all led by the brothers of Eta Omega , as the community was able to see Omega Men in their professional roles as financial planners, realtors, police officers, and counselors. Nearly 50 people attended the workshops.
Throughout the day, attendees were also able to receive free health screenings from Fulton County EMS workers and Bro. Bobby Pittman, a dentist. A voter registration station was also set up. Four Douglass High School seniors registered for the first time, and one female ex-convict registered for the first time since regaining her eligibility. There was also a library card drive, and a book giveaway for youth.
"Omegas Make a Difference Day" is an initiative of Eta Omega’s Social Action Committee, which is chaired by Bro. Derek Wilson. The event was led by Bro. Wilson as well as Bros. Rod Prince and Marlon Williams. Noted Bro. Wilson, "this was the beginning of what we hope will be an ongoing social action event for Eta Omega. We wanted to let the community know that we’re here working to make a positive difference in their lives. We hope that everyone who attended was uplifted in some way."
